What if you read the Bible every day this year?
Whether you try to be faithful in reading your Bible or never opened one, this would be a good time to begin something new. A new year – the January moment when we become focused on self-improvement plans for body, soul and spirit. And isn’t it amazing how turning a calendar page motivates us into believing we can change our world for the next 365 days . . . or at least for the first two weeks.
We somehow set ourselves up to fail by setting lofty goals instead of the more do-ables. How often have you intended to read the Bible cover to cover, only to get to the flood and call it a day? I know. And even if we get through Genesis, we know we’re heading for Numbers and Nahum, and figure it’s easier to just quit now.
So this might be a do-able . . . Choose one verse or portion of scripture for this coming year and store it in your heart so that it begins to speak over your life. Every-day.
Let me hear in the morning of Your steadfast love, for in You I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8 is what I’ve chosen – it reminds me I can depend on God’s mercies that are new each morning, before I get assaulted by the day. And even then – I can trust Him to direct my steps.
And then, what if you started a journal? A new year is a great time to begin a remembrance book – and you’ll thank me at the end of the year, girls. You will discover more of Him and more of you.
Maybe this past year was filled with unexpected stresses and challenges and there are times you’d like to forget. And I would also, but what I don’t want to forget is how God used it in my life, so I write it down. Every page scribbled with mercies I need to remember.
Do you fear the possibilities of this new year because of what last year brought into your life?
Well what if we equip ourselves with a 2017 survival kit to promote self-improvement – a Bible filled with miracles and a journal to record them – all of them. And I pray there will be many for you . . .
