A new little generation was born the other day. Eight-and-ahalf-pounds of beauty and hope. I have been praying for him before he was born, along with his little-big brother – and long before that his mother and his grandfather, too. Because ~ I believe the thing that matters most in life is to leave a lasting legacy upon those that come after.
I found this to be true through an old-begat I never met. A great grandparent who wrote beautiful gospel-filled letters to me when I was a wayward teen. The only thing that drew my attention to the old parchment pieces was his antiquated John Hancock penmanship. Artfully done. Years later when I came to Christ, I realized he recorded golden words with an anointed pen to etch truth in my heart long after he was gone. Because he loved Jesus and he loved my mother’s child. (This dear lady in the photo is his mother, Lizzie from England — so she is a great-etc.
God is often referred to in the Bible as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is a God of generations and expects those who have faith to treasure it enough to pass it on to the next age.
What inspired me to write this in a blog, aside from my new little great-grand Wells, is from the book of 2 Timothy while reading about two dear ladies. Lois and Eunice only appear once in Scripture but Paul thought they were influential enough to include and commend in his letter. Timothy was a young preacher, the spiritual son of the apostle Paul who mentored him well.
But his sincere faith began at his mom and gramma’s knee, says Paul.
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. I know that same faith continues strong in you. This is why I remind you to kindle afresh the spiritual gift God gave you . . . 2 Timothy 1:5
Think of it — what is it all for if not to pass down to the next generation — just to be knowledge containers? We must live it out and show it out. I believe more than ever that we live in an age when our children and theirs and theirs need to know what we believe and why. My grandchildren are long-grown now — into beautiful adults. They have shared through story, poems, journaling pieces, a high school thesis and even in a written song just how important a grandmother’s example has been in their life. And so, I thank the unknown great-grandfather who prayed for me, to pray for them . . .
Only take care and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children . . . Deuteronomy 4:9
For some, I know it can be challenging when we are distant from our family or not in agreement about spiritual matters. But we can still pass down a strong faith while respecting our kids and modeling trust and authenticity to our grands.
Our prayers will outlast us. The greatest jewel we can leave for those coming after is to pass on faith in Jesus, the greatest legacy of all.

Verna

Thank you Verna
I pray too. For me, children, extended family, friends…Someday we may know how our moments in His company affected those we know and love and those we don’t know. I am so privileged to be called to this cause. I don’t need to wait to know – so many prayers already answered. So vital and lovely a call
Warmly, Ruth
Yes, Ruth it is a beautiful calling. God in His kindness allows us to know now and will reveal even more, when . . . someday!
Dear Verna, I wish I had known my father’s mother but she died before my parents were married. I only know her through what several children and a grandchild said about her. Quiet, hard worker, and dedicated to her family. I have her pendant watch, so am connected in some small way. My grandchildren have received letters from me, but you inspired me to write more to let them know I am praying for them. Thanks for your encouraging messages.
Love this Verna….Our prayers will outlast us. What a joy to pray for our grands and great grands. Another was born just two days ago. What a blessing to pray for each one by name and share the joy of knowing Jesus, just like my grandmother did for me.
Again a wonderful devotional. Congratulations on the new addition to your family.
