I’ve had some time (yes, time!) for the past few days to do something I don’t often get to do. . . . notice.
So, there’s been time to rest – read – heal and watch Little House on the Prairie reruns while recovering from a surgical procedure a
few days ago to remove a seemingly miscellaneous organ. The gallbladder unfortunately seems to go into the same jar along with an appendix and spleen, but none of our wonderfully, fearfully made design should be disposable, right?
Somehow the limitations after surgery make taking a shower or taking a step a sacred rite. Ah, the little things we take for granted when we ordinarily move quick and strong.
So while getting rid of the bitter and the gall by other means, I’ve had an amazing sense of noticing what often goes unnoticed. Each evening, I take a few more baby-steps down to the pond and suddenly the familiar setting becomes a sanctuary. Ear-to-ear with a deer, we listen together to the symphony of bullfrogs mingling with fireflies in the wildflower-painted field. It’s amazing, this morning a heart-shaped cloud decorated the canopy. Really.
Then, a bird came along to sit a spell and wanted to chat, so I apologized for not doing more of that in the past.
I’ve seen this scene a hundred times every time I pass. Every time I . . . pass. When I’m in flight as fast as the birds.
But for now it’s time to settle and see.
Sometimes I think we live for the big days – the one with a plan, but maybe the big days are the unexpected grace times when we can cherish simplicity.
Life has a way of intruding on the magnificent. But, in our Selah moments let’s pause and take time to adore. Count the feathers on a near-by bird and count the blessings from a near-by God who cares for us more than the intricate design perched on the old wooden post.
Notice something today that you’ve already seen. Let’s.
Verna
Oh wow, Verna, what a beautiful reminder that He and His creation are always near, ready to comfort and soothe.
I just love how He does that for us, Vonda! It is a comfort to know He’s watching over all. Love you!

Thanks, Vince – I knew the hunter-man would love the deer part.

It’s so important to appreciate the little things, and that’s usually when you find out they aren’t little at all.
Thank you so much for your comment, Ronny . . . I agree, it’s in those times we find they weren’t little at all.

Verna,
Thanks for your insight. I remember similar awareness after I broke my foot and spent lots of time sitting. I love this:
Life has a way of intruding on the magnificent. But, in our Selah moments let’s pause and take time to adore.
