Wouldn’t it be helpful if every time we were in a dangerous place an alarm would sound?
The other day, my husband Jeff and I, were sitting together on our sun porch having morning devotions before beginning the day. I was grateful to be at home at this time of the morning with him, since most days I’m already at work.
In the middle of praying, I heard a close by annoying beeping sound. Totally distracted, I lifted my head and asked, “Is that sound coming from you?”
Surprised by the interruption, Jeff looked up, “No, it must be a trash truck backin’ up.”
I leaned over and put my ear to his bionic chest, “It IS you!”
It was the warning sound of a failing battery in the cardiac defibrillator implanted within his chest. I immediately called the emergency line at the cardiology office. The ICD nurse calmly informed me, “We have time . . . this is just a signal that something is going to happen. We need to schedule your husband and give him a new battery.”
It was interesting to find out that the warning would sound every morning at the same time until the battery was replaced. When I mentioned this to my husband, he said, “Oh, that’s what I’ve been hearing for the last few days!”
Imagine how I felt. If I were running on batteries, it would probably be the priority of the day to be scheduled as soon as possible. Reminder; God’s perfect timing allowed me to be here at the exact moment, therefore He will take care of the situation no sooner or later than He intends!
How often do we hear God’s warning sounds and ignore them?
The Bible is a manual filled with warnings of what can happen if we don’t live by certain principles, and yet it falls on a deaf ear until we face the result of not listening to what we “hear.”
An electronic defibrillator paces the heart and without the aid of this amazing device, Jeff wouldn’t live. A failed battery would end his life. Of course, we believe that every day is numbered and ordained and dying batteries won’t interfere with God’s sovereign will. However, we need to be responsible and not at all be presumptious!
We have loving instruction and alarm sounds written throughout the pages of Scripture that allow us to know how to have eternal life, and yet we ignore it. Like Jeff, we hear the warning sound and fail to identify it.
The good news is the Father has equipped us with an internal alarm system. He is named the Holy Spirit.
There have been countless times in my life when I have wanted to go in one direction, but the warning signal turned me in another way. When I didn’t heed the warning, I soon understood why there had been one!
I remain grateful for the goodness of God to be ready to sound the alarm.
My child, give attention to My words, incline your ear to My sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight. Keep them in the midst of your heart for they are life to those who find them. (Proverbs 4:20, 21)
